The accused has been identified as Ramachandran, a native of Nagapattinam, working at a car manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu. The victim has been identified as M Swetha, a resident of Chrompet.

Chennai: A 20-year-old woman was stabbed by a 25-year-old man near Tambaram Railway Station in Chennai in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. After killing the woman, the man had attempted to slit his own throat. But he was stopped by the public who in turn handed him over to the police officials.

The accused has been identified as Ramachandran, a native of Nagapattinam district, who was working at a car manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu. The victim has been identified as M Swetha, a resident of Chrompet, who was studying Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology in Madras Christian College.

Quoting police officials, a report in the News Minute said that both the accused and the victim had known each other for the past three years and the accused had invited Sweetha to the railway station on Thursday afternoon. As per the witnesses' statements, both of them had been having a conversation as they walked near railway quarters in Tambaram, the official said.

The police further said that the duo soon broke into an argument and Ramachandran took out his knife that he hid in his pocket and stabbed in her neck. Immediately, he had tried to slit his own throat but was stopped by the public, according to the report.

The report said that the profusely bleeding Swetha was taken to Chrompet government hospital where doctors declared her as brought dead and Ramachandran who sustained injuries during his suicide attempt, was undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital.

Similar incidents have been reported in the past in and around Chennai in the last few years. However, the woman survived after sustaining serious injuries.
