New Delhi: The Greater Chennai Corporation deployed drones from Monday to spray anti-larval chemicals or insecticides in the water bodies to control mosquito breeding.


Two drones are used on a daily basis to spray approximately 400 litres of chemicals, said Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi. "Stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes," he added.

Drones are being used to spray insecticides in areas that are inaccessible by the workers. Last year also the city's civic body used drones to spray anti-larval chemicals. The drones had been deployed at a cost of Rs 10 Lakh to spray in 30 minor and four major canals, The Hindu reported.


Three drones covered 60 kilometres every day for the span of 15 days, the report mentioned.


These chemicals are reportedly sprayed to kill culex mosquitoes, which are bred in the sewage mixed waterways.


Besides Chennai Corporation, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Mumbai's BMC has also earlier used drones to spray anti-larval chemicals in order to prevent mosquito breeding.
