‘We Can Definitely Remove NEET': MK Stalin After Student Dies By Suicide In Tamil Nadu

The chief minister’s comments came after a NEET aspirant Jegadeeswaran from Tamil Nadu's Chromepet died by suicide earlier because he was unable to clear the exam for the past two years.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged students in the state not to lose their lives under any circumstances.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said that NEET can be removed as it was proving to be an obstacle to the goals of students in the state. In a Tweet posted by news agency ANI, he also asked students not to lose their lives under any circumstances. His comments came after a NEET aspirant Jegadeeswaran from Tamil Nadu's Chromepet died by suicide earlier because he was unable to clear the exam for the past two years. In a separate Tweet, the chief minister also said that Tamil Nadu Government is working and taking legal steps towards removing NEET.

Jegadeeswaran who scored 85 per cent in Class 12 examinations wanted to become a doctor. He joined the NEET Coaching Center and appeared for the examination. Commenting on the matter, the CM said he was shocked to know that Jegadeeswaran from Chromepet committed suicide.

Shockingly, his 48-year-old father Selva Sekar also committed suicide later in Chrompet. Meanwhile, Sekar was separated from his wife and used to stay with his 19-year-old son Jegadeeswaran.

Stalin also said that just when he was thinking about how to console Jegadeeswaran’s parents over his death, the next day his father Selvasekar also died by suicide. 

He said, in a Tweet posted by ANI, “I don't know how to console Jegadeeswaran's family, friends and relatives. It is horrible that a bright student who dreamt of becoming a doctor has now joined the list of NEET suicides."

The CM added, “I am asking all students- no one should lose their life in any situation. We can definitely remove NEET which is an obstacle to your goals. Tamil Nadu government is working and taking legal steps towards that.”

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi last week, while interacting with NEET UG 2023 toppers, asserted that he will never clear the Bill seeking exemption for the state from the central exam. He said even though the Bill awaits Presidential assent, the NEET exam would stay.

Responding to a question of one of the parents, who sought the Governor’s “clearance to ban NEET” in Tamil Nadu, Ravi said the achievements of the medical aspirants without NEET were not enough for the future and the qualifying exam would stay.
