Chennai: A tense situation prevailed in Dindigul district after a gang waylaid and attacked a vehicle in which former AIADMK Minister MR Vijayabhaskar was traveling along with Karur district panchayat committee member Thiruvikka near Nagampatti of Vedasandur on Monday. The gang also broke the car windows and abducted Thiruvikka.
The incident took place just on the day Karur district village panchayat vice president election was scheduled as per the court order.
According to The New Indian Express, former Minister Vijayabhaskar was escorting Thiruvikka from Dindigul to Karur.
In Karur, Thiruvikka was supposed to vote in the vice-chairman election on Monday. However, he was abducted and later dropped off in the evening. The police then rescued him from Natham.
After the incident, AIADMK members blamed DMK for the abduction.

The election to Karur district village panchayat vice president was crucial since AIADMK and DMK have six members on the panchayat committee. As a result, Thiruvikka's vote was crucial to decide the final winner.
Earlier, Madurai bench of Madras High Court directed State Election Commission to hold the poll on Monday. The MHC also directed the SEC to not declare the result till final orders.
After the abduction, the counsel of Thiruvikka informed the Bench of Justices D Krishnakumar and R Vijayakumar about the incident on Monday.
The judges said that they would hear the matter on Thursday.
Talking to New Indian Express, Dindigul Superintendent of Police V Baskaran said Thiruvikka informed them that four miscreants waylaid the vehicle, threatened him to get into the vehicle and later dropped him.
He said that the police did not find any sign of forcible abduction. Further investigation is on.
