Chennai: Telangana MP Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) opened its account by winning two seats of the total 16 wards contested by the party in the Tamil Nadu municipal elections. AIMIM's Niyamatullah and R Nabeela were the two candidates who emerged victorious in the polls. 


According to a report on IANS, AIMIM candidates defeated the Muslim League candidates who contested in an alliance with DMK. In the two wards, Muslim League finished second to AIMIM. 


AIMIM’s candidate Nabeela won by securing 50.46 percent of votes in ward number 19 and candidate Niyamatullah secured 34.10 percent of the total votes in ward number 4 in Vanniyambadi.

Following the victory, AIMIM TN president TS Vakeel Ahmed thanked the people who voted for the party members. 


The victory of AIMIM comes even as AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is involved in a hectic campaign in UP.


With the win in TN, AIMIM currently has representatives in municipal bodies in four south Indian states including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

AIMIM has one MP each from Telangana and Maharashtra. The party has 14 MLAs with seven in Telangana, five in Bihar, and two in Maharastra.


This is not the first time AIMIM is contesting in the elections. Earlier, AIMIM faced Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in an alliance with TTV Dinakaran's AMMK. However, the party did not win any constituency.
