Earlier, the students alleged that the professor pointed out some of the girl students and said that boys like thin girls these days and that if the photos of such girls were posted in the matrimonial column they will get guys immediately. The students also said that they have audio and video evidence to prove the claim, as per a report in The New Indian Express.
In February 2023, a Dalit woman student alleged that she was harassed based on her caste by an assistant professor of Madurai Kamaraj University. The student said she was verbally abused by Shanmugaraja, an assistant professor in History Department, for nearly 2 years.
The issue came to light after the student gave a complaint to the Vice Chancellor on February 16. In 2011 too, 12 Dalit students filed a complaint against Shanmugaraja for deliberately failing them in a subject. When their papers were re-evaluated, all the students passed in the subject, said a report on The News Minute.
