On January 11, the Assembly secretariat issued the vacancy notification. As a result, by-elections have to be mandatorily held for the seat within six months of notification.

The bypoll will be crucial for AIADMK since the party has been facing successive defeats since general elections 2019. This is also one of the crucial election in the western belt which is considered the turf of AIADMK after the ouster of former CM O Panneerselvam.

Earlier, A. Yuvaraj of the Tamil Manila Congress contested against Thirumagan Evera in the two-leaves ticket of AIADMK but lost in the 2021 Assembly polls.
