Empty Rake Of EMU Derails Near Chennai's Avadi, Traffic Affected

The EMU derailment disrupted traffic on the route and caused delays to numerous trains.  

The Southern Railway official said four empty coaches of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) derailed near suburban Avadi in Chennai on Tuesday. The incident disrupted traffic on the route and caused delays to numerous trains. The incident happened after the train departed Ananur shed and arrived in Avadi on its way to Beach station. According to sources, the train did not halt at Avadi station and instead derailed near Hindu College station.

According to PTI, a Southern Railway official said, "It was an empty rake from the Avadi maintenance car shed. There has been an empty rake derailment at Avadi."

No passengers were involved in it as the train was coming from Avadi car shed, it said. 

"Top Railway officials have rushed to the spot and restoration work is in full swing. Inconvenience caused to passengers of other trains delayed on the route is regretted," Southern Railway said.

It said, "EMU services are also diverted to run on the fast line. The suburban line restoration works are in progress and traffic will be restored in few hours."

The Suburban UP line (towards Chennai Central) was affected while there was minor disruption on the Express main line owing to OHE cable glitch. Consequently, five EMU trains towards Chennai Central were delayed and three Express trains from Chennai Central including Vande Bharat (Chennai - Mysore), Shatabdhi (Chennai - Mysore) & Kovai Express (Chennai - Coimbatore) were regulated near  Ambattur railway station. 03 Express trains Originating from Chennai Central were rescheduled ( Saptagiri Express, Brindavan Express & Double Decker Express), according to the release.

Suburban trains that handle commuter traffic are all electric multiple units (EMUs).
