Eight Months Pregnant Woman Takes Pills To Abort Baby, Dies In Chennai

The hospital performed a hysterectomy but the woman's condition did not improve and she died in six hours of admission

Chennai: An 8-month pregnant woman who was afraid of the delivery related complications took a pill to abort her fetus and reportedly died due to the complications. The woman also recently suffered a fall in the bathroom and was getting treatment for the same.

According to a report on Times of India, a 23-year-old woman Kumari Kanjaka was a native of Odisha but she migrated to Chennai with her husband Pratap Ulaka and niece Geetha Kanjaka. However, on September 14, Kumari and Geetha went to their hometown for a funeral after a pregnant woman died due to labour related complications. The incident created fear in Kumari.

Upon reaching Chennai on September 20, initially Kumari slipped in the bathroom and sustained injuries but she was immediately rushed to a private hospital. She was admitted in the hospital and was provided treatment. However, on September 25, Kumari started complaining of stomach ache and was taken to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. However, the doctors said that she was critical since she contracted an infection in the womb and the family should remove the uterus.

Following this, the hospital performed a hysterectomy but the woman's condition did not improve and she died in six hours of admission. Then her body was sent for post-mortem.

The doctors then enquired the family and it was known that Kumari took pills to abort the baby in her seventh month. The doctor to TOI said that the uterus was already fragile due to the fall and the medicine complicated it so anything can be ascertained only based on the post-mortem report.

The police have booked a case under Section 174 (III) (suspicious death) of CrPC.
