7 Killed In Landslide During Construction Work Near Tamil Nadu’s Ooty

Ooty General Hospital Dean Padmini confirmed the deaths of six people in the landslide in Ooty.

Seven construction workers died on the spot in a landslide at a construction work site at Lovedale, near Ooty in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Another two injured construction workers who were rescued from the debris were rushed to the Ooty Government Hospital for treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Sakila (30), Sangeeta (35), Bhagya (36), Uma (35), Muthulakshmi (36) and Radha (38).

"Two workers with serious injuries were taken to Ooty General Hospital while one worker is still trapped in the debris. Rescue and rescue operations are underway," said Ooty Police, according to a report on ANI.

Meanwhile, one construction worker is missing and believed to be under the debris.

Ooty General Hospital Dean Padmini confirmed the deaths of six people.

The construction workers at the site informed media personnel that they were erecting a retaining wall beneath a cliff towering approximately 25 feet above the site. According to rescue operators, an abandoned public toilet structure on the cliff collapsed onto the workers, along with a section of the cliff itself. The rescue efforts were ongoing with the use of earth movers and cranes to free the remaining trapped workers, including women, according to IANS.

Last year, following heavy rainfall in November, landslides hit the Nilgiris, causing transportation disruptions in various parts of the district. As a result, schools in certain districts within the Western Ghat regions declared a holiday for students.

In the early hours of November 9, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide on the Kotagiri and Mettupalaiyam road, near Kunjappanai. The landslide disrupted the traffic between Coimbatore and Nilgiris.
