Chennai Weather: Heavy Overnight Rainfall Disrupts Flights, Uproots Trees

Within Chennai city, the rains resulted in the uprooting of trees in several areas, including Kodambakkam.

Heavy overnight rains lashed the city and its surrounding areas causing significant disruptions on Tuesday. The unexpected downpour led to flight delays and the uprooting of trees in various parts of the city.

According to airport officials, both international and domestic flights experienced delays due to the heavy rains. Services to and from major destinations such as Dubai, Delhi, and Pune were particularly affected. Passengers faced long wait times as airport operations struggled to cope with the weather-induced disruptions.

Within the city, the rains resulted in the uprooting of trees in several areas, including Kodambakkam. Civic personnel were promptly deployed to remove the fallen trees and clear the affected roads. A massive banyan tree uprooted and fell in the campus of Omandurar Government Hospital.

On Monday, the highest rainfall of 12 cm was reported in Sholinganallur followed by Poonamalle with 11 and Chembarambakkam, Pallikaranai, Meenambakkam, Alandur, Kolapakkam among others receiving 7 cm.

According to weather bloggers, the rain was caused by the convergence of opposing winds. An independent weather blogger, who runs Chennai Rains (COMK) X handle said, "The tale of two cities. Southern suburbs of Chennai saw bulk of the Rains as the Thunderstorms slightly drifted south as it came close to the coast. City areas and northern parts saw moderate rains mostly. All of the rains happened in an hour or so."

Another blogger Pradeep John in his X handle, Tamil Nadu Weatherman, said, "Very high intense storms are knocking Chennai doors. It has taken almost 3 hours to come from Rayalseema. Unlike yesterday, today the storms are gaining strength and big gust front is seen. So it will be very windy."

He also predicted intense storms in KTCC on Tuesday night.

Despite the disruptions, the heavy rains brought a welcome relief from the sweltering heat that had gripped the city in recent days. Many residents expressed relief at the cooler temperatures, enjoying a break from the relentless summer heat.
