Chennai Teen Dies In Explosion At Home After Science Experiment Goes Wrong

A 17-year-old from Chennai was killed in an explosion at his home while experimenting with some chemicals.

A 17-year-old student was killed in an explosion while carrying out an experiment with some chemicals in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, news agency PTI reported citing officials on Thursday.

As per the PTI report, the police said that he had experimented out of his own "academic interest," during which the chemicals exploded, leading the roof of his residence to collapse on him, resulting in his death.

The class 12th student studied in a private school that falls under the Kolathur police station limits.

Experts reached the spot to examine the substances the victim used that caused the explosive reaction, according to PTI. The police said he had “carried out some experiments out of his self-academic interest with the available chemical substances in an negligent manner at his residence”.

The teen had died on the spot due to the injuries sustained after the asbestos sheets and the wall of his residence collapsed on him. According to the PTI report, the incident happened after the chemical substances “accidentally went off”.

Here's What Happened: 

According to the PTI report, the victim, who appears to have carried out some experiments out of his self-academic interest with the available chemical substances in a negligent manner at his residence, sustained injuries, died on the spot as the asbestos sheets and the wall of his residence collapsed and fell on him. 

A case of unnatural death was registered, the statement said, as per PTI.

"In this context, a case of unnatural death (u/s 174 CrPC) was registered at....experts of Forensic Science Department visited, examined the spot and are analysing the chemical substances. The case is under investigation," it added, as per PTI.

According to The New Indian Express, the victim lived with his father, who runs a bakery in Mambalam. The boy’s father was at the bakery when the explosion occurred. The neighbours said they heard a loud explosion and saw black smoke billowing out of the house.
