Chennai Man Dies Hours After Release From Police Custody

The hospital said that there were no external injuries on Dinesh’s body. However, his wife said that Dinesh was badly hurt and was limping from pain.

Chennai: A 26-year-old man died hours after being released from police custody in Chennai. The man just two hours after returning home from the police station swooned in his bathroom. The family members rushed him to Stanley Government Hospital but he was declared dead. Following this, the family alleged that the man died due to police torture. 

The 26-year-old man is survived by his wife Kowsalya, four-year-old daughter, and mother Latha. 

According to a report on The New Indian Express, the police said, K Dinesh Kumar of Perambur was a history sheeter with multiple cases pending against him in Chennai. Dinesh was also working as a kitchen chimney cleaner. 

On Tuesday, Dinesh allegedly left his home for work around 6 am. 

The police said that Dinesh and his friend Ramachandran allegedly robbed a phone from a commuter on a bus on Tuesday. However, Ramachandran immediately escaped with the phone from the spot but the people caught Dinesh and handed him over to the police. 

The police said, Dinesh’s wife received a call from the police by 10.30 am. In the call, Thoraipakkam police reportedly told her to return a stolen phone. They also handed over the phone to Dinesh Kumar who told her to meet his friend in Moolakothalam near Basin Bridge and bring the phone. 

By following the instruction, Kowsalya reportedly brought the phone back around 1 pm and handed it over to two policemen near Kannagi Nagar toll plaza. The police released Dinesh after collecting the phone.  

Dinesh and Kowsalya returned home. However, Dinesh allegedly swooned two hours after being released from the police station, said the report.

The family members immediately rushed him to Stanley Medical College Hospital but doctors declared him dead at 10.40 pm.

Based on a complaint from Dinesh’s brother, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police filed a case.

Meanwhile, the doctors also performed an autopsy on Wednesday. However, the report is yet to be released. 

The hospital said that there were no external injuries on Dinesh’s body. However, Kowsalya talking to The News Minute said, Dinesh was badly hurt and was limping from pain.
