Chennai Gets Moderate Rainfall, IMD Says Showers To Continue In Parts Of TN For Next 3 Days

Usually, Chennai receives the lowest rainfall of the year in the month of March.

Parts of Chennai witnessed mild to moderate showers due to the presence of a trough on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also predicted that light to moderate rains will be experienced in parts of Tamil Nadu till March 20. 

On Friday, parts of Chennai including Egmore, Thousand Lights, Ramapuram, Central experienced rainfall. Usually, Chennai receives the lowest rainfall of the year in the month of March. The city gets an average of 3.5 mm of rainfall. 

The IMD said that thunderstorm with light to moderate rain will likely occur at one or two places over Virudhunagar, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Pudukkottai, Vellore and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu during the next three hours.

On Thursday, IMD said, “Yesterday’s (Friday) trough from north interior Tamil Nadu to Konkan now runs from south Tamilnadu to north Konkan across Coastal, Interior Karnataka and Goa at 0.9 km above mean sea level.”

“Yesterday’s (Friday) trough from sub-Himalayan west Bengal to south Odisha now runs from cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh & neighbourhood to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Gangetic West Bengal & Odisha at 0.9 km above mean sea level,” it said. 

As a result, the IMD predicted light to moderate rain at a few places with isolated thunderstorm and lightning over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas till March 20.

For Chennai, IMD said, “For next 48 hours, sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum temperature is likely to be 33-34°C and minimum temperature is likely to be around 24-25°C.”

An independent weather blogger, Chennai Rains (COMK) said, many parts of Tamil Nadu saw thunderstorms last evening while few places around Chennai saw moderate rains Friday early morning. The next 2-3 days could see more rains across the East Coast of India influenced by the Westerly Trough.
