Tamil Nadu: Ennore Factory Responsible For Ammonia Gas Leak To Be Shut

At the time of the gas leak, several workers were present on the premises of the factory in the Nandesari GIDC area.

After a sudden ammonia gas leak led to health concerns and the hospitalization of several individuals in Ennore, Tamil Nadu Minister of Environment and Climate Change Meyyanathan Siva ordered the closure of Coromdandel International Limited Industry till further orders. The ammonia gas leak, detected in a sub-sea pipe in Ennore, reportedly caused discomfort to five individuals who were subsequently admitted to a healthcare facility.

"Coromdandel International Limited Industry to be shut till further orders," said Meyyanathan Siva V, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Tamil Nadu.

DIG, Joint Commissioner Avadi, Vijayakumar tweets, said, "No need to panic. Stabilised. No more gas (ammonia) leaks at Ennore. People reassured and are back home. medical and police teams present."

Around 11:45 pm on December 26, an unsettling odor permeated the neighborhood near the manufacturing facility, causing discomfort. Over 25 individuals in residential areas, including Periya Kuppam, reported feelings of unease, nausea, and faintness, prompting their immediate transport to nearby hospitals, according to sources.

In response to the gas leak, word quickly spread, leading residents to evacuate their homes in panic, gathering on roads while seeking assistance. Simultaneously, sources reported that officials from the fertilizer unit took measures to address the technical issue that led to the incident.

Police reassured the public, stating that experts were addressing the issue, and urged them to return home, emphasizing that 'there is no problem.'

The incident occurred a day after four workers were hospitalized due to inhaling toxic gas from a pipe leak at a pharmaceutical chemical company in Vadodara, Gujarat. Police reported that the health condition of all workers is stable.
