AAI Shortlists Pannur & Parandur Sites For Setting Up Second Airport In Chennai

Of the four sites, AAI shortlisted the two sites since the sites in Padalam and Thiruporur have some constraints and limitations.

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has shortlisted two sites, Pannur and Parandur, for setting up Chennai's second airport. The AAI has also referred about the same to Tamil Nadu government.

According to a report on The Hindu, AAI team from Chennai inspected four sites including Pannur, Parandur, Thiruporur and Padalam for setting up an additional airport and prepared a pre-feasibility report.

Of the four sites, AAI shortlisted the two sites since the sites in Padalam and Thiruporur have some constraints and limitations.

Further, Pannur and Parandur have been notified to Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation who will take up the matter with the state government, it said.

An AAI official talking to The Hindu said, a techno-feasibility study, obstruction limitation surface, and few more studies will be conducted and sent to the steering committee of central government for their approval.

If the airport works are taken up at a faster pace, the airport will become a reality only after five years, he said.

For setting up a greenfield airport there should be at least 2,000 to 3,000 acres of available land. The two sites are 30 kms from Sriperumbudur and Sunguvarchatiram.
