Kolkata RG Kar Hospital Murder Case Live Updates: As protests over the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in RG Kar hospital intensify, heat mounts on the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
In view of the outrage in India after the rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Ministry of Home Affairs has mandated that each state and Union Territory submit bi-hourly reports regarding the law and order in their region.
This has been implemented since 4 PM on August 17.
"Regarding two-hourly law and order situation report competent authority has desired to monitor the law and order situation report of your state/UT against the murder of a trainee woman doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata West Bengal. Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard may kindly be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs control room," the notification by MHA said.

"We have strongly condemned the rape and murder... Mamata Banerjee, our leader and the CM, has done her best. One accused was arrested within 12 hours, and she had announced that the case will be handed over to the CBI, if necessary. Now, the case is (being probed) by CBI, but the Left and BJP are using this unfortunate incident to disturb West Bengal," he said.

Commenting on the Kolkata doctor's rape and murder case, BSP supremo Mayawati on Saturday urged political parties to "rise above party politics".
"The whole country is worried and angry over the atrocity of rape-murder of a lady doctor in Bengal, yet the TMC government is trying to give it a religious and political colour in its defense, while the opposition is no less in this matter. In such a situation, it is important to worry about how the culprits will get strict punishment and the victim's family justice," Mayawati posted on 'X' in Hindi.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav commented on the rape-murder incident at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital saying, "Mamata Banerjee herself is a woman and understands the pain of a woman. She has taken action as per demand. The government has also decided to get the matter investigated by CBI or any other institution. But along with this, the people of the Bharatiya Janata Party should not do politics... BJP should not take political advantage from the incidents..."

Healthcare services were affected across Odisha on Saturday as doctors joined the nationwide protest, demanding justice for the rape and murder of a colleague at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
According to the news agency PTI, about 6,000 members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) joined the protest across the state, leading to the closure of outpatient departments, elective surgeries, and laboratory services in both government and private hospitals. The 24-hour protest will continue till 6 am on Sunday.
Besides seeking justice for their colleague, the agitating doctors were demanding central legislation that ensured the safety and security of healthcare workers and pledged to continue their stir till it was met.

The CBI questioned former principal Sandip Ghosh for hours on Friday afternoon. The probe agency quizzed Sandip Ghosh about his location during the night of the incident.
The CBI is trying to ascertain whether his statement matches the statements of others or not. Sources inside the central probe agency revealed that so far they have questioned three of the victim's fellow doctors. They were questioned about what they knew about the night the incident happened. They have recorded their statements. The CBI also questioned who was the last person to see the girl that night.

A day after West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a group of 30-35 agitating doctors met him at the Raj Bhavan on Friday to discuss their security concerns, an official said. The group told Bose about "several malpractices" that have allegedly been going on at the medical facility.
"The doctors expressed their insecurity at the hospital. They also told the governor about malpractices at the facility. The medics requested the governor that they want the central government to intervene and arrange their security at the hospital as they do not feel secure after Wednesday night's vandalism there," the official told PTI. Governor Bose assured them that he would bring the matter to the Union Home Ministry's attention, the official added.

The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association on Friday suspended OPD services at public healthcare centres to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
"We are demanding expeditious justice for the victim, central protection act for healthcare professionals and adequate security arrangements at public healthcare facilities," Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) president Dr Akhil Sarin said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Emergency and medico-legal services remained functional during Friday's protest, he added. Outpatient department (OPD) services were suspended at primary and community health centres and those at the subdivision level, as well as civil hospitals. Medical professionals in the state also held sit-ins at the health centres to demand expeditious justice for the victim.
On West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's rally against the RG Kar rape-murder case, BJP Mahila Morcha's National Vice President Pooja Kapil Mishra says, "What an irony that the CM of the state where this incident took place is a woman who is coming out on the road after so many days... I would like to call Mamata Banerjee a drama queen... Women are being tortured in West Bengal, incidents like rape keep happening... After having a woman CM for three consecutive terms in the state, this is the height of her insensitivity... She has buried the law in a ditch and left it.."

The Indian Medical Association's Arunachal Pradesh Branch (IMA-AP), expressing anguish over the alleged rape and murder in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has decided to join the nationwide protest by shutting down all routine services across the state for 24 hours on Saturday.
The attitude of the government authorities regarding the inquiry is pathetic, IMA-AP president Dr Kesang Wangdi Thongdok alleged on Friday.
"The IMA-AP has resolved to join the nationwide protest by shutting down all routine services, including OPD, elective OT cases and non-essential services in all government hospitals, private hospitals, NGO-run hospitals and private clinics across Arunachal for 24 hours on August 17," he said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Dr Thongdok, however, maintained that emergency and in-patient services will function normally. Meanwhile, the IMA-AP has demanded, among others, immediate arrest of the culprits, speedy trial and maximum punishment. It also sought the formulation of a central law to protect doctors and other healthcare personnel.
Doctors at the Centre-run hospitals Safdarjung and RML will hold a silent protest march, sporting black ribbons, in solidarity with the protesting doctors "As you are aware, in light of the heinous incident that occurred at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata, involving a resident doctor, the residents of our institute are on strike, demanding the urgent implementation of a 'Central Protection Act' to ensure a safe environment for practising doctors," the FAIMS said in a communication to the AIIMS-Delhi director.
The Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS), Delhi, has announced that routine OPD and operation theatre services will be suspended on Saturday to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata and subsequent vandalism at the facility.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the opposition CPI(M) and the BJP of orchestrating vandalism at RG Kar hospital and trying to distort the truth behind the rape-murder of a woman doctor by spreading fake news on social media.
Reiterating her demand for capital punishment for the culprits, Banerjee commended Kolkata Police for their investigation into the case, which was later transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. She also urged the Central Bureau of Investigation to resolve the case by Sunday and demanded that the culprits be hanged.
While addressing a rally, she said, "We want the truth to come out, but some quarters are spreading lies to mislead people. Attempts are being made to hide the truth by circulating fake news on social media. We condemn these activities. We want the culprits to be punished".
The West Bengal CM led a protest rally from Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday, demanding justice for the woman doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week.
"The nexus between the Left and BJP should be exposed. The CPI(M) and the BJP are behind the vandalism at the hospital. They vandalised the facility to destroy evidence of the ghastly crime," she said. The Chief Minister slammed the Union government for sending teams to Bengal but turning a blind eye to similar incidents in BJP-ruled states.
On the rally taken out by Mamata Banerjee on Friday, Union Minister Sukanto Majumdar said: "...She (Mamata Banerjee) herself is the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Health Minister, then against whom was she protesting by taking out a rally?... She is trying to stop the BJP, we assure her that this movement will not stop, and we will continue our protest."
