UP Man Pronounces 'Triple Talaq' On Wife In Front Of Her Students At Barabanki School
The woman alleged that she was given "triple talaq" by her husband after he arrived at her school. The man, identified as Mohammad Shakeel, had returned from Saudi Arabia.
A man arrived at a private school in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki and pronounced "triple talaq" on his wife in front of her students while she was in class, news agency PTI reported citing police officials on Thursday (August 31). A case had been filed against the woman's husband, the report said.
In her police complaint, the woman claimed that her husband gave her "triple talaq" after he arrived at her school. Mohammad Shakeel, the man, had returned from Saudi Arabia, the report said.
The woman told police that her in-laws tortured her for dowry after her marriage to Shakeel, a Firozabad district resident, three years ago on September 1, 2020, according to the report.
According to the report, she claimed that her husband, mother-in-law, and others used to beat her up for dowry. She also claimed that her in-laws threatened to drive her out of the house if she did not bring dowry and eventually sent her to her maternal home. Police said she claimed her husband left for Saudi Arabia without informing her, it added.
The woman stated that she had been living at her maternal home since then and worked as a teacher at a private school.
The woman's husband returned from Saudi Arabia on June 28 and arrived at her maternal house in Barabanki on July 10. He invited her to accompany him home, but she declined because she could not return right away, PTI reported citing the police.
The woman said her husband stayed with her for six days before returning home. According to police, he arrived at her school on August 24 and pronounced "triple talaq" on her in front of the students while she was in class, according to the complainant.
Station House Officer, Kotwali city, Sanjay Maurya said a case has been registered against the man and investigation launched, the report said.
He added that the case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with assault, intimidation, and dowry harassment, as well as the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
In 2019, the practise of triple talaq was declared illegal and unconstitutional in the country.
