Mayawati Demands Separate OBC Census, Says 'BSP Will Support Govt In Parliament'

BSP supremo Mayawati on Friday said that her party will support the central government if it takes a positive decision on conducting a separate census for the OBC community.

Lucknow: BSP supremo Mayawati has demanded a separate OBC census amid demand for a caste-based census in the country. Former CM Mayawati has also proposed to support the Central government on the issue. Mayawati said on Friday that BSP will definitely support the Central government not only in the Parliament but also outside if it takes a positive step regarding the demand for a separate census of OBC community in the country.

Mayawati tweeted, "BSP has been demanding a separate census of OBC community in the country from the very beginning. If the Central government takes positive steps in this matter, then BSP will definitely support the government inside and outside the Parliament.

Recently, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanded a caste census to be conducted in the country. CM Nitish has also written a letter to PM Narendra Modi on the same.

The last caste census was held in 1931 before the country attained independence. Based on this figure, it is reported that the OBC population in the country is 52 percent. The Mandal Commission had a lot of difficulty in working without the caste data and recommended that caste data be collected in the next census
