Uttarakhand: IMD Issues 'Red' Alert For 2 Days, CM Dhami Visits Emergency Operation Centre

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday visited the State Emergency Operation Center in order to review the situation in the state.

New Delhi: Amid heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a 'Red' alert for the state for the next two days following which Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the State Emergency Operation Center in order to review the situation, reported news agency ANI.

As per the agency, CM Dhami held a meeting with senior ministers to take stock of the situation.

According to IMD, a 'red' alert has been issued for seven districts for Wednesday - Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun. On Thursday, the same districts, except for Bageshwar, will be under a 'Red' alert.

The Uttarakhand State Emergency Operation Centre has asked all district magistrates to take precautions in their respective districts in view of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in the aforementioned districts. 

As per IMD, Uttarakhand received heavy rainfall from August 21 to 22. Kotdwar region received 95.50 mm of rainfall, Kashipur 93.50 mm of rainfall, and Pauri Garhwal received 87.00 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Incessant rain has wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand causing huge loss of lives and property. Heavy rain has caused flooding in many areas, triggering massive landslides and flash floods in several places in the state.

Additionally, the Pranmati River in the Chamoli district has swelled due to heavy downpours creating problems in the ongoing rescue operations across the state.

Earlier on Saturday, Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Satpal Maharaj had said that 406 roads in the state were blocked due to landslides. 

Previously, an official assessment indicated that the casualties from rain-related incidents in the state stood at 52, while 37 people were injured.
