Tomato, Other Vegetables Prices Skyrocket In Southern India Due To Unprecedented Heavy Rains

The naveen variety of tomatoes were sold for Rs 140 per kg.

Chennai: The price of tomatoes increased multifold and touched Rs 140 per kg in many parts of southern India since the supplies are affected in the wake of the unprecedented heavy rains in all states on Monday. The tomato prices in the country started to increase since September end due to the monsoons. 

According to a report on PTI, the data by Consumer Affairs Ministry said, the retail prices of tomatoes were ranging from Rs 30-83 per kg on Monday while the price of tomatoes in the western and southern regions was Rs 30-85 and Rs 39-80 per kg respectively. 

Meanwhile, the price of tomatoes in Kerala ranged from Rs 125 per kg at Thiruvananthapuram, Rs 105 per kg in Palakkad and Rs 91 per kg in Kozhikode and Rs 83 per kg in Kottayam. 

In Karnataka, the tomato prices ranged from Rs 100 per kg in Mangalore while Rs 57 per kg in Bengaluru, which produces tomatoes for the country. 

In Tamil Nadu, the highest price of tomatoes was reported from Ramanathapuram with Rs 102 per kg while the price was Rs 83 per kg in Chennai. The Naveen variety of tomatoes were sold for Rs 140 per kg. 

In Puducherry, tomatoes were sold for Rs 85 per kg.

In Andhra Pradesh, the tomato price was Rs 77 per kg in Visakhapatnam while Rs 85 per kg in Warangal. 

The price of vegetables especially drumsticks stood at Rs 140 per kg in Koyambedu in Chennai.
