Maharashtra Health Minister Tanaji Sawant on Thursday announced that all treatments in Government Hospitals will be provided free of cost and the expenses for the same will be borne by the state government. The decision was taken in the cabinet meeting today, he informed. Under this decision of the Maharashtra Government, free treatment will be available made available in Primary Health Centres, Rural Hospitals, Women's Hospitals, District General Hospitals, Upazila Hospital, Super Specialty Hospitals, and Cancer Hospitals.


"All treatments in Government Hospitals will be provided free of cost by the government. Decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting today," Sawant said, as per news agency ANI.



As per inputs, the decision has been taken under Article 21 of the Constitution which guarantees the Right to Health for citizens.


About 2.55 crore people come for treatment in all government hospitals in Maharashtra in a year. There are a total of 2,418 institutions under the Public Health Department in the state and patients will get free treatment at all these places.

The said cabinet meeting was chaired by Health Minister Sawant and attended by Service Commissioner Dhiraj Kumar, Health Services Director Dr. Swapnil Lale, Law and Justice Department, Social Welfare Department Joint Secretary Ashok Atram, Smile Plus Foundation Founder President Yogesh Malkhare and other officers of Home Department and Health Department were also present.


Previously, amid the Covid pandemic, Maharashtra became the first state in 2020 to offer free and cashless insurance protection to its people. The scheme was announced by then State Health Minister Rajesh Tope wherein all citizens would be covered under the state government's health scheme Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY). A ration card and domicile certificate were made essential documents to apply for the scheme.
