'Playing With Lives Of Students': Delhi HC Slams DU In Contempt Case By St. Stephen’s College
The Delhi High Court was hearing a contempt plea filed by the St. Stephen's College, accusing the University of defying and deliberately delaying the implementation of the court's directives.
The Delhi High Court pulled up the Delhi Univeristy (DU) over "wilful disobedience" of court orders and summoned DU officials to appear before the court via videoconference on October 15 to explain why they should not face legal penalties for allegedly defying court orders regarding seat allocation in St. Stephen's College in the Post Graduation courses.
The high court slammed the Delhi University officials for ignoring court directions regarding the admission of certain students to postgraduate courses at St Stephen's College and summoned the registrar and the dean of admissions of DU. The court pointed out that the students were yet to find out where they stand in pursuing their preferred Post Graduate courses as there has been no response from the University to emails, requests or persuasions.
The court was hearing a contempt plea filed by the St. Stephen's College, accusing the University of defying and deliberately delaying the implementation of the court's directives. The college has approached the high court contending that this has caused uncertainty for students seeking admission to various Post Graduate courses.
The court opined that thet officials concerned of the respondent DU, while settling their personal grievances with the management of the -St Stephen's College, are virtually playing with the lives of the students.
If further noted that the University officials are miserably failing to show cause as to what steps they have taken so far to facilitate the admission of the selected students by the St Stephen's college in getting admission to PG courses.
"At the cost of repetition, inordinate delay on the part of the respondents shall cause irreparable harm to the selected students. It is disappointing to see academics of repute displaying such insensitivity," the order said.
The high court added that this action or deliberate omission is neither acceptable nor sustainable in law.
