Pakistan Cricket Board Should Be Independent From Government: Shahid Afridi

Earlier this month, PTI had reported that there are very less chances of Ramiz continuing as PCB chief after Imran Khan's ouster unless the new Premier wants him to stay & carry on with his duty.

New Delhi: Pakistan cricket team's former captain Shahid Afridi opined about making the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) a fully autonomous body in which there is no government interference in its affairs. Afridi's statement comes at a time when there is uncertainty over current PCB chairman Rameez Raja's future following the ouster of his close friend Imran Khan as Pakistan Prime Minister.

In Pakistani cricket, the Prime Minister of the country is automatically appointed the Patron of the PCB and he nominates two candidates, one of whom is chosen by the General Assembly.

“I feel the PCB should be independent from the government. The appointment of the chairman and CEO of the board should not be managed by the government.

“The PCB needs to be totally independent and have its own in-house election system with no interference from the government functionaries,” Afridi said at a reception, as quoted by PTI.

Afridi pointed out that a new chairman came in he brought in his own system.

“That is why Pakistan cricket faces problems. I think that departments have a big role to play in Pakistan domestic cricket but if the board has introduced a new system it should be given proper time to be tested out now,” Afridi said.

Earlier this month, news agency PTI had reported that there are very less chances of Ramiz continuing as PCB chief after Imran Khan's ouster unless the new Premier wants him to stay and carry on with his duty.

"If Shahbaz Sharif becomes new Premier, then there is every likelihood he might convey to Ramiz his services are no longer required and bring back Najam Sethi to head the Board," the source had told PTI.
