Belgium, Great Britain start off with wins in the men's hockey team events. Belgium beat Ireland 2-0 in their game while Great Britain beat Spain 4-0.
And suddenly we are feeling pumped up. Olympic is one event where I, personally, have failed to sit and watch objectively.
Solid from Manu Bhaker who hit 27 inner-circle 10s, the most by any shooter in the qualification. A similar performance inf final can help India get a medal. Rhythm, however, could not recover from the early blip and is out of Paris 2024. She finished 15th with a score of 573-14x.
Manu Bhaker IS THROUGH TO THE FINALS! Fantastic. This is some news. She finishes with 580 points. Those ahead of her finished with 582. Manu will compete for the medal in Paris in the 10m Air Pistol Women's category.
Manu Bhaker On The Cusp Of Qualifying for the finals. The biggest positive for the Indian contingent on the opening day, if this happens. Fantastic qualification performance from her.
10s In Her Last Four Shots Of The Fifth Series from Manu to finish her fifth series with a score of 96. She has upped her game when it mattered the most. Final series loading. A good performance here and she should be competing for the medal. Hope still alive for a good news from shooting on the opening day after the early heartbreak.
Two 9s Too in the fifth series. Surely nervy moments for her and India's shooting contingent hopes. The Sports Desk is nervous here at ABP Live. Come on, Manu! Let it not be a tale of so close but yet so far. We have had many of them already in Indian sporting history.
First bad shot really from the pistol shooter. All eyes on her really at this moment. But she has followed her 8 with a 10 in the very next shot. Get back into the 10s, Manu!
Two 10s To Finish Off The Fourth Series For Manu after she started off four 9s. That allows her to finish with 96 after a 97, 97 and 98 respectively in her first three series.
Seems like Manu has starting to feel the nerves a bit, perhaps sensing a place in the final. A few 9s in the fourth series. Still in top three though.
Halfway stage of the 10m Air Pistol Women's Qualification. Manu is sitting at the third place. It will be a top-eight in the final. Manu would want to finish well here.
Manu Strikes 98 In Her Third Series and starts off her fourth with a 10. She is back in top 2. How is that for a performance? (Touch Wood). Rhythm trailing behind, completing her second series on 92.
And the latest we are hearing is that Rhythm has stopped shooting for now for reasons not known yet. She is struggling with something. She is yet to complete her second series.
Bhaker on the fourth spot in the 10m Air Pistol Women's Qualification. She has hit 11 inner 10s of her 20 shots which could come in handy in case of a tie.
It's going good for Manu so far. She is in and around the top 3 mark. Rhytm trailing behind.
Rhythm might have left herself too much to do here, she is playing catch up or it seems like so at the moment. Manu looking in fine form.
Both Manu and Rhythm shot 97 in the opening series. Manu was trailing in the 10th but is back in the top 4 after a good start to the 2nd series. Rhythm, who was placed 11th, has also shown steady improvement.
Good Start By Manu and Rhythm in the first series of the 10m Air Pistol Women's Qualification. Will they provide a bit of a good news to the Indian contingent?
Ledecky vs Titmus vs Fairweather vs Macintosh. It's all set up for an epic final in the women's 400 metre freestyle swimming after the heats. USA vs Australia vs New Zealand vs Canada respectively in that epic final later this evening.
Time for quite the most filmy redemption arc for Manu Bhaker? At least there would be the opportunity to complete the same for her after the Tokyo Olympics where she failed to qualify for the final in the same three event in which she will be competing in Paris- 10m air pistol, 25m pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team.
Meanwhile, it's a second gold for China. What a start to their Olympic campaign it has been for them already. Yani CHANG and Yiwen Chen aced their five dives, finishing with the top score in each round to walk away with the gold. Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook settle for silver for the USA while Great Britain's Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen earn first-ever medal with a bronze.
Manu Bhaker, Rhythm Sangwan of India In The 10m Air Pistol Women's Qualification in a few minutes from here. Can they hold their nerves? Surely the Indian contingent is better than what they have managed to achieve in the last two Olympics, at least that's what their stats and performances in World Championships show.
What Next For India on the opening day? 10m Air Pistol Women's Qualification Up Next in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. That could be the key to India's confidence in the shooting contingent especially after the early heartbreak.
Among the big rivalries to watch out for on the opening day is Australia and USA in the swimming pool.
India’s 10m Air Rifle mixed team duos of Ramita Jindal-Arjun Babuta and Sandeep Singh-Elavenil Valarivan have failed to make it to the medal rounds of of their respective events which means India are set to go medalless on Day 1. Mirabai Chanu's Tokyo feat won't be matched as she had bagged a silver in the opening day of the Tokyo Games.
Hello everybody. It was Adarsh who has set up this blog nicely for me. And from now, hopefully, till the rest of what could be dubbed as Day 1 of the Olympics, it would be me, Saurabh Ganguly, to take you through a packed day's play. The latest breaking news coming in from Paris is that China has won the first gold medal of the event. China got the better of Republic of Korea in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team final to claim the first gold medal on 27 July.
An eight and five nines in the fifth series have hurt Sarabjot Singh's chances. He needs a strong comeback in the final series to secure a spot in the eight-shooter final.
Sarabjot's 43rd shot was an 8, causing him to slip out of the top 8.
Sarabjot Singh remains in the top 8 as he shoots his fifth series. With two series of 10 shots still to go, there's plenty of time for things to go awry, so he needs to finish strong. Meanwhile, Arjun Singh Cheema shot a fourth series of 94 and is currently in 18th place.
Arjun Singh Cheema appears to have found his rhythm as well, starting the third series with three 10s and temporarily moving up to 5th place.
Sarabjot Singh bounced back from his disappointing 94 in the first series with a solid 97 in the second. Are the Indians starting to find their rhythm? Singh managed five inner 10s in this series.
Arjun started his second series with an off-target 8 to the top right, but he recovered strongly, scoring a solid 97 to stay in contention for the top 8. Sarabjot also scored a 97, and both shooters are climbing back up the standings.
Both Arjun and Sarabjot are showing improvement in their second series. Arjun has just moved back into the top 10.
Sarabjot Singh had a disappointing start with a poor score of 94, hitting only one inner 10 in his series of 10 shots. Arjun Cheema's performance was also mediocre, scoring 96 and placing him somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Both shooters will need to significantly improve to make it to the final eight.
10m Men's Pistol qualification round: Sarabjot Singh has started strong with a perfect 10 and is currently in the qualification zone. Meanwhile, Arjun Cheema scored 9.5 on his first attempt and is currently tied for 15th place.
In rowing, "repechage" is a second chance round for boats that did not qualify directly from the initial heats. In this instance, with quarterfinals following the heats due to the number of entries, the top two boats from each repechage heat will advance to the quarterfinals and stay in medal contention. The remaining boats will move to the Semifinals E/F, which are solely for classification purposes. Balraj will compete in the repechage tomorrow.
Ramita and Arjun finished 6th with a total score of 628.7 (Ramita: 314.5, Arjun: 314.2), while Elavenil and Sandeep ended 12th with a combined score of 626.3 (Elavenil: 312.6, Sandeep: 313.7).
In Series 3, the Indian shooting teams struggled again. Ramita and Arjun finished 6th, just missing out on a final spot, while Elavenil and Sandeep ended in 12th place.
The two Indian teams in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team qualification round are struggling. Ramita and Arjun are 8th, while Elavenil and Sandeep are in 18th place.
