Mary Kom quits as boxing's national observer
New Delhi [India], Dec 1 (ANI): Indian ace and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom has resigned as the National Observer for boxing.
It is learned that Mary Kom's decision comes after sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore made it clear that active sportspersons will not be holding the position.
Therefore, her appointment was in a conflict of interest with the rule as she is still an active sportsperson.
Talking to ANI, Mary Kom's manager informed, "She has already sent a mail a week or ten days before directly to the sports minister. So today was just the official announcement."
The Indian star boxer had recently added another feather to her already illustrious career as she clinched the Asian Women's Boxing Championship.
The 2012 London Olympic medallist, was appointed as the National observer by former sports minister Vijay Goel in March along with 11 others.
Along with the boxer, Olympic gold-medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra, double Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar and former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Akhil Kumar were also appointed for the position. (ANI)
