The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, on Thursday (January 2), conferred the prestigious Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sports honor in the country, on four outstanding athletes this year.
Notably, no cricketer has been included in this selection. The awardees are Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, Praveen Kumar, and D Gukesh, who have all demonstrated exceptional performances in their respective sports.
On January 17, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Gukesh, Manu Bhaker, Praveen Kumar, and Harmanpreet Singh will be conferred with the prestigious Khel Ratna Award by the President of India.

Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals in shooting at 2024 Paris Olympics, Harmanpreet Singh, a key player in India's bronze-winning hockey team at the Paris Olympics, Praveen Kumar, who clinched a gold medal in high jump at the Paralympics, and D Gukesh, who recently became the youngest chess champion, have all been honored with the Khel Ratna Award.

As for the prize money, the Government of India offers a cash award of Rs 25 lakh to each Khel Ratna recipient, in addition to a trophy and a certificate of commendation. This amount was increased to Rs 25 lakh from Rs 7.5 lakh in 2020.
There was some initial controversy regarding the exclusion of Manu Bhaker from Khel Ratna list. Bhaker, who won India's first medal at the Paris Olympics, expressed her disappointment at not being included, with her father also voicing concern. Following public outcry, the government added her name to the list of awardees.
A total of 32 athletes will be presented with Arjuna Award: Jyothi Yarraji, Annu Rani, Nitu, Saweety, Vantika Agrawal, Salima Tete, Abhishek, Sanjay, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Preeti Pal, Jeevanji Deepthi, Ajeet Singh, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari, Dharambir, Pranav Soorma, H Hokato Sema, Simran, Navdeep, Nitesh Kumar, Thulasimathi Murugesan, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, Manisha Ramadass, Kapil Parmar, Mona Agarwal, Rubina Francis, Swapnil Suresh Kusale, Sarabjot Singh, Abhay Singh, Sajan Prakash and Aman.
