IPL Franchises To Cut Salaries Of Foreign Players Who’ll Miss The UAE Leg: Report

New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to resume its second leg from September 17 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to the England cricket team's managing director, Ashley Giles said that England players will miss the IPL as they want to give their players some rest. 

But a new report by Inside Sport confirms that the foreign players that will miss the tournament have to face a cut in their salaries on a pro-rata basis. Just to give a perspective, if we take the example of Ben Stokes who earns 12.5 crores (excluding taxes), will be eligible for pay of 6.25 crore rupees. 

“Yes it is correct, in case they (foreign players) can’t make it to UAE for IPL, franchises will be within their right to cut their salaries and pay them only on a PRO-RATA basis," said a BCCI official to Inside Sport. 

Under the current rules, if a player makes himself unavailable for a season then he will only get paid on a pro-rata basis, that is, only for the matches, he played with the team.  This is the clause that will be cited to cut down the salaries of players missing the rest of the IPL.

It was earlier reported that England players will be missing the IPL as they have a series to play against Pakistan from mid-October and their players would require a rest period. Ashley Giles, England's managing director said, "We are going to have to give some of these guys a break at some point. But the intention of giving guys a break for, say, Bangladesh, wouldn't be for them to go and play cricket elsewhere. We have to manage our schedule now, so we get our guys arriving in the best shape possible for the T20 World Cup and the Ashes."

Buttler, Morgan, Sam Curran, Tom, Curran Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes and Sam Billings are part of IPL.
