PR Sreejesh, India's Legendary Hockey Goalkeeper, To Retire After Paris 2024 Olympics

Paris 2024 Olympics: The Summer Games will be PR Sreejesh's last international tournament, the Indian goalkeeper confirmed.

PR Sreejesh, India's legendary hockey goalkeeper, has confirmed that the forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympics will be his last tournament in international field hockey. Sreejesh confirmed the same through a post on X (formerly Twitter).

"As I stand on the threshold of my final chapter in international hockey, my heart swells with gratitude and reflection. This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for the love and support from my family, teammates, coaches, and fans," Sreejesh wrote in a long thread on X.

"I still remember my father selling our cow to buy my first kit. His sacrifice ignited a fire within me, pushing me to strive harder, dream bigger," he added.

PR Sreejesh's International Career

As far as Sreejesh's international hockey career is concerned, he went on to make his India debut in 2006 and represented the country a total of 328 times. He was even the captain of the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Even though the team did not win a medal in the Rio Games in 2016, Sreejesh played a pivotal role in the team winning their first-ever Olympics medal in Hockey since 1980 in when India clinched a bronze in Tokyo 2020.

"Leading the Indian team as captain in the Olympics was an honor beyond words. And being named the World’s Best Goalkeeper was a recognition that I will cherish forever," the 36-year-old said in one of his posts of the thread.
