La Liga giants Real Madrid have released an official statement on Friday, March 15, which is in concern with the ongoing racism and discrimination against star forward Vinicius Jr. Racism against the Brazilian is not a new case and has long been presisting ever since his arrival in the country. One of the most infamous incidents was during the last season, when Valencia fans mocked and racially abused the player, which led to an ugly spat between the players of the club on the field.
“Real Madrid C. F. has filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office against the crimes of hatred and discrimination, for the racist and hateful insults directed against our player Vinicius Junior in the vicinity of the Olympic Stadium of Montjuic and the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid before the F matches. C. Barcelona-Naples and Atlético de Madrid-Inter Milan, of the Champions League. Real Madrid asks the Prosecutor's Office to request the security forces for the existing recordings in both locations in order to identify the perpetrators of such racist and hateful insults," read the statament.
Real Madrid condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination and hatred that have been taking place, unfortunately repeatedly, against our player Vinicius Junior. Our club will continue to work in the defense of the values of football and sport, and will remain firm in its fight for zero tolerance in the face of episodes as disgusting as those that continue to occur in recent times,” further added.
Real Madrid are currently leading the La Liga and are looking potent enough to win the league, with a cushion of points advantage in their bag. Real Madrid have drawn Manchester City as their quarter final opponents in the UEFA Champions League 2023/24 and it will be the recap of last year's semi final tie between the sides.
