Premier League Bans Gambling Sponsorships On Front Of Jersey Shirts

Premier League clubs announced their decision to ban gambling sponsorships on front of jersey shirts on Thursday.

In a significant development from the Premier League, all the clubs participating in the sporting event have agreed to end the gambling sponsorship on the front of the jerseys. However, the decision will be implemented from the beginning of the 2026-27 season.

The clubs announced their decision on Thursday that betting companies would not be their main sponsors of their jerseys. However, with the decision set to be gradually phased in, the running partnerships will continue till the 2025-26 season. The ban now will mean focus on other areas where betting and gambling companies can sponsor within the sporting or the Premier League ecosystem.

"Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising," the Premier League said in an official statement.

"The announcement follows an extensive consultation involving the League, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of the Government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation. The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship. To assist clubs with their transition away from shirt-front gambling sponsorship, the collective agreement will begin at the end of the 2025/26 season," it added.

Notably, in the last few years advertising related to gambling in sport as well as sports broadcast has been a matter of extensive debate. The Government in the United Kingdom is reviewing the legislation regarding gambling and a recommendation with the changes required could be in effect in the coming months.
