Ranji Trophy 2022: Tournament To Take Place In Two Phases Announces BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

This year, the Ranji Trophy season was slated to start from January 13 but fears of a third wave due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 forced BCCI to postpone the domestic cricket tournament.

The 2022 Ranji Trophy season will be played in two phases, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said. The league stage matches will be played in the first phase while the knockout matches will be played in the second phase.

This year, the Ranji Trophy season was slated to start from January 13 but fears of a third wave due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 forced BCCI to postpone the domestic cricket tournament.

Jay Shah said that the knockout phase of the tournament will end in June this year. "My team working closely to mitigate any kind of health risk caused by the pandemic, while ensuring a highly competitive red-ball cricket contest. Ranji Trophy is our most prestigious domestic competition, which has been providing Indian Cricket with an enviable talent pool," said Jay Shah to ANI.

Just a few days ahead of the tournament, some players and staff members from teams of Mumbai and Bengal Ranji camps tested positive for Covid-19. Mumbai's all-rounder Shivam Dube and team's video analyst tested positive for Covid-19.

The Ranji Trophy hasn't been played since the 2019-20 season. Covid-19 led to calling off of the cicket seaosn in India.
