Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 4 Medal Tally: Shushila Devi Bags Silver, Bronze For Harjinder, Vijay

After a more than a decent performance on Day 3 of the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, India secured three medals on Day 4 rising the medal tally to 9 and standing sixth in the CWG 2022 rankings behind Australia, England, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.

While Judoka Shushila Devi Likabam bagged a silver, Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur and Judoka Vijay Yadav settled for bronze medals on the fourth day of the showpiece event. Judoka Shushila Devi did grab the attention by becoming the only Indian to win multiple medals in Judo in Commonwealth Games. While the late-night contests for lifter Harjinder and Judoka Vijay turned out to be prosperous as they both bagged bronze.

Shushila Devi in the final bout of the 48 kg category has gone down fighting against South Africa's Michaela Whitebooi. Meanwhile, in the women's weightlifting 71 kg category, Harjinder Kaur won a bronze medal after lifting a total of 212 kg (93 kg in snatch and 119 kg in clean & jerk). However, Harjinder missed the silver medal by a whisker as Canadian lifter Alexis Ashworth won silver after lifting a total weight of 214kg.

After defeating Scotland's Dylan Munro on Monday in the men's 60kg repechage round, Indian Judoka Vijay Yadav was up against Cyprus' Petros Christodoulides for a bronze medal match. He closed the match early and secured an ippon, which helped him secure a bronze medal in the men's 60 kg category.

Other Athletes Who Drew Attention

In other significant displays, Indian badminton in the mixed team event defeated Singapore 3-0 and moved ahead to a gold medal match against Malaysia. In the mixed team semifinal, men's doubles Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, women's singles PV Sindhu and men's singles Lakshya Sen sealed victories as the scoreline read 3-0 which catapulted India towards a golden dream.

On the flip side, Indian paddlers displayed their mettle by defeating Nigeria 3-0 to reach the men's final event and will have to face Singapore in the gold medal match.

Meanwhile, Lawn Bowls women's fours team clinched a historic win against New Zealand and assured a silver medal for India. Other athletes who excelled with significant performances are boxers Amit Panghal (flyweight) and Hussamuddin Mohammed (featherweight) entered quarterfinals.
