‘Only 46 Years Overdue’ — US Library Gets Back A Book It Issued In 1976

The book, Annie Annie by Molly Cone, was supposed to be returned on September 8, 1976, according to the library slip seen in one of the photos shared on Facebook by Owasso Library in Oklahoma.

A library in the United States of America has received a book that it had issued to a reader nearly five decades ago. The copy of the novel, Annie Annie, by author Molly Cone appears to be in a good condition, with the library slip still intact and firmly placed in a pocket inside the book, as seen in the photos shared by the Owasso Library in Oklahoma on Facebook. The book it just received was supposed to be returned on September 8, 1976, according to the library slip seen in one of the photos.

In the “thank you” note posted on Facebook along with a laughing emoji, the library said: “Thank you to whoever returned this copy of Annie Annie to us! According to the inside pocket, this book was due back to the Central Library on September 8, 1976. Only 46 years overdue!”

The library, however, doesn't know who had been issued the book all those years ago. And no late fine has been charged, either.

Engaging with the users commenting on the post, the library clarified in the comments section: “For those of you who are worried about late fines...this book was checked out before computer systems, so there was no way for us to tell who had it checked out. Plus the library no longer charges overdue fines so no worries either way!”

Asked what would have been the amount, theoretically, by now, it replied: “Overdue fines used to cap off at $2 per book so not that bad actually!”
