70-year-old Saha, who represents Tripura’s Town Bordowali assembly constituency, has been the Chief Minister of the princely state since 2022. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tripura on May 15, 2022, just a year ahead of the state assembly elections, after Biplab Kumar Deb stepped down from his post. Saha again took over charge as the Chief Minister of Tripura for the second time on March 8, 2023, after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the assembly elections winning 32 of the 60 seats.
Saha was a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from April 3, 2022, until he became the Chief Minister for his first term. He is an MLA from the Town Bordowali assembly constituency since June 26, 2022. He was also the state BJP chief in between 2020 and 2022. He switched to the saffron party from Congress in 2016.
Before joining mainstream politics, Saha was a professor at the Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital. Saha received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in oral and maxillofacial surgery degrees from Bihar’s Patna Dental College and King George's Medical University in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow respectively.
