Tension Grips Assam's Cachar After 12-Year-Old Madrasa Student Found Dead, Accused Held

A 12-year-old Madrasa student was found dead in Assam's Cachar district on Sunday. A probe has been launched in the matter.

Tension gripped Assam's Cachar district after a 12-year-old Madrasa student was found dead with his throat slashed inside the hostel at the Darus Salam Hafizia and Alia Madrasa. His body was found by his roommates when they tried to wake him up for 'namaz'.

Upon being informed, the police immediately rushed to the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem.

Sensing the gravity of the case, Cachar superintendent of police, Numal Mahatta, rushed to the spot to investigate the matter.

“On Sunday morning, the deceased’s friends found him lying dead. We immediately rushed to the spot to investigate the matter. During the preliminary investigation, we have found that the incident may have taken place between 3 and 4 am. We have called all the students and teachers of the madrassa for questioning. The deceased’s brother also studies in the same madrassa and was present when the incident took place, Mahatta told media persons.

Around 13 students of the madrassa have been detained by the Dholai police for questioning.

The Madrassa has been sealed by the district administration following the incident with the police investigating the case.

Speaking exclusively to ABP Live, Mahatta said, “We have arrested one person in this connection. The accused, Mukchil Rehman Khan is the ‘imam’ of the madrassa. Though he has not confessed of committing the crime, eyewitness accounts have revealed of Khan killing the minor student in the dormitory of the madrassa. The accused has been booked under section 302 (committing murder) of the IPC. We are currently questioning him. He will be forwarded to the court later in the day. The case is under investigation.”

The deceased, Rajimul Hussain Laskar, was enrolled in the madrassa only three months ago.

Hussain had reportedly fled the madrassa twice without informing Khan, which angered him. The accused allegedly tortured him physically when he returned.

The family members of Hussain have lodged a complaint to the clerics of the madrassa. The clerics asked Khan to seek apology and ensure that he would never repeat such an act in the future.

Meanwhile, the family has demanded the death penalty for the accused.
