PM Has 'Brazen Indifference': INDIA Bloc MPs Visit Relief Camps, Meet Guv During Manipur Visit — Top Points

The 21 MPs from 16 Opposition parties of INDIA alliance submitted a memorandum to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and submitted a memorandum demanding urgent rehabilitation and resettlement.

A delegation of 20 MPs from the Opposition bloc went on a two-day visit to violence-hit Manipur on Saturday. The delegation took stock of the ground situation and would make recommendations to the government and the Parliament for a solution. "We have got permission from the state government to visit the affected areas as also the relief camps. We have also got permission to meet the governor, who has allowed time to the delegation on Sunday," Congress MP Naseer Hussian said ahead of the visit on Saturday. 

The delegation included Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, K Suresh and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, TMC's Sushmita Dev, JMM's Mahua Maji, DMK's Kanimozhi, NCP's Mohammad Faizal, Jayant Chaudhary of RLD, Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD, NK Premachandran of RSP, T Thirumavalavan of VCK, JD(U) chief Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, Aneel Prasad Hegde of JD-U, CPI's Sandosh Kumar, CPI(M)'s AA Rahim, Samajwadi Party's Javed Ali Khan, IUML's E T Mohammed Basheer, AAP's Sushil Gupta, Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena-Uddhav Thackeray), D Ravikumar (DMK), and Phulo Devi Netam of Congress.

The delegation met with people from both the Meiteis and Kuki communities, estranged in an ethnic clash in the state since May 3.

  • Visiting a relief camp in Churachandpur district, the epicentre of violence, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday raised concern for the people staying in the camp, stating that 'their fear was evident from their expressions'. He observed that the affected people seemed hesitant to communicate with anyone and believed that the government would not offer them any assistance.
  • The delegation visited four relief camps, two in Churachandpur, one in Imphal, and one in Moirang, said Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi 
  • Speaking about the condition of the shelter homes, DMK leader Kanimozhi said the people are living in the relief camps in "appalling conditions" and the food being distributed is also not adequate.
  • The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) wrote a letter to opposition alliance INDIA, and sought its support for their demand of a separate administration and implementation of President's rule in Manipur. "We implore you to help us survive this onslaught by supporting our demand for a separate administration from Manipur and to urge the central government to introduce President rule immediately in Manipur to end the violence," the two-page letter read.
  • On Sunday, the delegation met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and submitted a memorandum signed by 21 Opposition MPs demanding urgent rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected people to bring peace and harmony to the state.
  • Targeting the Modi government, the MPs questioned the 'Prime Minister's silence' in the memorandum which said "silence of Hon'ble Prime Minister shows his brazen indifference to the violence in Manipur'.
  • The Parliamentarians also raised the issue of internet suspension in the state for the last three months saying it is aiding the unsubstantiated rumours, which is adding to the existing mistrust among the communities.
