'Can Have 2, 3 More Wives Now': Assam CM Himanta's Marriage 'Advice' To MP Badruddin Ajmal Ahead Of Polygamy Ban
Last year, Badruddin Ajmal expressed his opinion that the Assam government ought to prioritise raising awareness against multiple marriages rather than enforcing a ban on polygamy.
New Delhi: Taking a dig at AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, a known critic of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that proposes uniform civil laws for all communities, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday he should consider marrying again before the Lok Sabha elections as the UCC would come into effect once the polls are done and dusted.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Himanta said, “He should consider marrying again now as the UCC will come into effect in the state once the elections are done and dusted. There will be no trouble if he is ready for his nuptial vows now, before the elections, as it (polygamy) isn’t illegal yet. We could even attend his nuptials, if invited.”
pic.twitter.com/SberenDXI7

“From what I know, he has a single wife. However, he could have two or three now, if he so desires. Polygamy will be deemed a criminal practice by law once we roll out the UCC after the elections. All preparations are in place (for rolling out UCC in Assam). So, if he is considering a second marriage or more, he only has a few days in which to do it. After the polls, it will be illegal,” Himanta said.
Ajmal, the lone AIUDF MP, is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Dhubri.
Last year, Badruddin Ajmal expressed his opinion that the Assam government ought to prioritise raising awareness against multiple marriages rather than enforcing a ban on polygamy. Ajmal's statement came amid reports of the Assam government's intention to introduce a law to prohibit polygamy.
Under the leadership of Himanta Sarma, the BJP government in Assam took decisive action against child marriages in two stages throughout 2023. CM Sarma said that investigations revealed instances where elderly men were engaging in multiple marriages, often with young girls from economically weaker backgrounds.
