The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam has recorded the highest-ever number of visitors this season, with nearly three months of tourism still left, field director of the KNPTR, Sonali Ghosh said. The surge in tourism has also enthused the local businesses.
Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity and iconic inhabitants, including the one-horned rhinoceros, the KNPTR has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for wildlife aficionados and both domestic and foreign tourists in India.
The KNPTR is experiencing a remarkable boost in tourism, thanks to the recent success of innovative initiatives, including the promotion of Kajir Ronghangpi stories, cycling in the park’s Kohora range, Panpur car (Jeep) safari and boat safari in the Biswanath wildlife division. These initiatives, aimed at promoting local culture and heritage, have captured the hearts of both residents and visitors alike, turning Kaziranga into a must-visit destination. The tourist flow was affected during the pandemic years.
In the current tourism year 2023-24, the central and western ranges of the park were opened for tourists in mid-October last year and the other two ranges were opened in late November 2023. Around 1,79,573 tourists have already visited the park so far and the estimated revenue earned is nearly Rs 4.59 crore.
Local businesses have also benefited from the increased tourist flow with hotels, restaurants and shops reporting a surge in activities. The success of these events has created new opportunities for collaboration between the public and private sectors, further contributing to the overall economic growth of the park area, the release added.
Starting in February 2024, Kaziranga will introduce tea tourism, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the region’s tea culture. This new initiative aims to showcase the beauty of Kaziranga while providing an immersive experience in the art of tea production, the release further stated.
