Assam Home Secretary Siladitya Chetia Dies By Suicide After Wife Succumbs To Cancer: DGP Singh
Assam Home Secretary Siladitya Chetia committed suicide in a hospital shortly after his wife's death from cancer. Police and forensic officials are investigating the incident.
Assam Home Secretary Siladitya Chetia on Tuesday took his own life inside the ICU of a private hospital, moments after his wife passed away. Chetia, who previously served as Superintendent of Police in Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts, used his service weapon to end his life, police confirmed.
"In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Siladitya Chetia, IPS 2009, Secretary Home and Political took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. Entire Assam Police family is in deep grief," Director General of Police G P Singh said in a post on X.

Team Of Forensic And CID Officials To Investigate Circumstances Surrounding Assam Home Secretary's Death
A team of forensic and CID officials has been dispatched to the hospital to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Chetia, whose late father also served in the police force, is survived by two sisters. He had suffered significant personal losses in recent months, including the deaths of his mother and mother-in-law, news agency PTI cited sources as revealing. Chetia and his wife did not have any children.
Meanwhile, condolence messages poured in response to DGP Singh's post as some users also highlighted the importance of mental health and emotional wellbeing.
