Army Chief Arrives In Crisis-Hit Manipur On 2-Day Visit To Review Ground Situation 

Army Chief General Manoj Pande has arrived in Manipur to review the situation as the state reported rising incidents of sporadic violence over the last few days.

Guwahati: The Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande, has arrived on a two-day visit to the crisis-hit northeastern state of Manipur to review the situation in the wake of fresh violence. During his two-day stay in the state, the Chief of Army Staff will visit several places where he will interact with the local formation commanders and obtain a first-hand account of the situation obtained on the ground. The Army Chief will also interact with the troops of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles.

On Sunday, the Army Chief will meet Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and Chief Security Advisor of Manipur Kuldiep Singh to discuss and deliberate on the current situation and future trajectory, in order to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Owing to the internal security situation in Manipur, the state administration had requisitioned the Indian Army and Assam Rifles on May 3, 2023.

As an immediate response, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles deployed 135 columns to diffuse the situation by carrying out active domination of sensitive and fringe areas.

Approximately 35,000 civilians were evacuated to safe zones and immediate relief and humanitarian aid were provisioned to the displaced civilians by the troops of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles.

Due to the persistent efforts of the troopers of Assam Rifles, five hardcore cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), People's War Group (PWG), on Saturday surrendered before the Manipur Police at Somsai in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

The Assam Rifles had engaged these cadres into negotiation over a prolonged period and motivated them to surrender and join the mainstream.

The surrender will not only ensure in assisting cadres to exit unlawful approach but also help to rebuild their lives for transformation and reconciliation. 

The cadres deposited three pistols, three magazines and 19 rounds of live .22 ammunition.

Army Enhances Deployment, Search Ops In Manipur

The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have launched large-scale combing operations in vulnerable flash points, and also in the higher reaches, surrounding the Imphal Valley of Manipur to nab armed miscreants. Continuing its operations, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have launched multiple search operations in the Kangchuk, Motbung, Saikul, Pukhao and Sagolmang areas of Manipur, commencing from the wee hours of Saturday, to track down the armed insurgents, if any, operating in these areas. These operations are part of the ongoing efforts of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, to restore peace and normalcy in the northeastern state of Manipur.
