Earthquake Of 5.3 Magnitude Hits Taiwan, 17 Injured As Taipei Worst Hit

According to the US Geological Survey, the latest 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Taiwan and was felt in Taipei was reported at 5:08 pm local time at a depth of 8.9 kilometres. 

Taiwan sees frequent quakes as it is located between two tectonic plates.

Taiwan's capital was shaken by a strong earthquake on Monday evening injuring 17 people.

The Central Weather Administration said that the earthquake was of 5.5 magnitude and originated in eastern Hualien. The region was also the epicentre of a magnitude-7.4 quake that hit on April 3, causing landslides around the mountainous region, AFP said in a report.

According to the US Geological Survey, the latest 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Taiwan and was felt in Taipei was reported at 5:08 pm local time at a depth of 8.9 kilometres. 

Earlier this month, at least 14 people had died after a strong earthquake hit Hualien and Taiwan. There have been hundreds of aftershocks ever since.

Taiwan's central news agency said that quake was the biggest to hit the island nation since 1999 when a 7.6 magnitude tremor killed around 2,400 people.

Moreover, in 2016, more than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan.
