Omicron Variant: Top epidemiologist of the United Kingdom John Edmonds has indicated that the Omicron variant may cause the number of new COVID-19 cases to increase to 60,000 per day. In a discussion with 'The Guardian', Edmonds said "After a discussion at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine event organized by the Royal Society of Medicine, on Thursday indicated that the number of confirmed cases may rise in the coming days."
The Omicron variant has rapidly spread in other countries because of its resistance to vaccines. It is comparatively more transmissible than other variants of COVID-19. However, early laboratory results by scientists indicate that the immunity of existing vaccines on this variant will not be completely eliminated.
On the other hand, doctors in South Africa reported that positive cases of the Omicron variant have shown only mild symptoms. The Expert Panel of the World Health Organization (WHO) said their scientists would need more data before making any comments about the Omicron variant.
The UK's Health Safety Agency (NHS) has said it expects at least half of COVID-19 cases to be of the Omicron kind in the next few weeks. If we look at the cases reported in the last two weeks and their growth rate, these cases are likely to double in the next 4 weeks. In view of the growing covid cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tightened restrictions in the UK and appealed to people to work from home as much as they can.
Edmunds described the Omicron variant as highly dangerous and appealed to the UK public to take their COVID-19 booster shots at the earliest.
