Nepal Earthquake: Fresh Tremors Jolt Country As Toll From Previous Quake Touches 157

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 jolted Nepal with epicentre 169 kilometres north west of Kathmandu after a powerful quake of 6.4 magnitude hit the country on Friday killing 157 so far.

Another earthquake of magnitude 3.6 on the Richter scale hit Nepal, day after a powerful quake of magnitude 6.4 jolted the Himalayan nation on Friday that has killed 157 people so far. According to National Centre for Seismology, the Sunday earthquake had its epicentre 169 kilometres North West of capital Kathmandu. 

On Friday night, Nepal was hit by the powerful quake with its epicentre in Jajarkot, around 500 kilometres from Kathmandu, an its effect were felt as far as New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar where people were jolted out of their homes in panic. 

The death toll since Friday has rose to 157 while 357 others were reported injured and several houses and other buildings reduced to rubble. 

Nepal Prime Minister Pushp Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Saturday visited the affected areas and met with the families of the victims. He took stock of the situation and said hundereds of people have been injured and thousands of houses were destroyed, adding that his government was engaged in rescue and relief operations. 

 Nepali Army, Nepali Sentinel and the Armed Police Force have been tasked with taking all the injured to the hospitals for rescue through helicopters, he added.

"We have also rescued our own injured with our helicopters. Our government is doing the work that should be done for today and tomorrow," said PM Prachanda on Saturday, adding that he has also called a Cabinet meeting along with a meeting of the Disaster Management Committee on Sunday. 

The Friday quake was the most catastrophic in the Himalayan nation since the 2015 earthquake, which killed over 9,000 people and wounded over 22,000 more. Around 159 aftershocks were reported following the quake, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
