Indonesia Plane Crash: Second black box of Lion Air jet found

The Lion Air flight crashed into the Java Sea off the coast of Jakarta in October killing all 189 people onboard.

New Delhi: Indonesian authorities said that navy divers have found the second black box from the devastated Lion Air jet that crashed last year killing all 189 people onboard, agencies reported.  The cockpit voice recorder was found at around 9 am on Monday, AFP reported quoting head of Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee. The latest findings are being viewed as a possible boost to the accident’s investigation. The Lion Air flight crashed into the Java Sea off the coast of Jakarta in October killing all 189 people as it fell into the sea shortly after taking off for the short journey to Pangkal Pinang. As per reports of investigations, the plane had encountered technical problems. The pilot had asked air traffic control for permission to turn back to the airport but then contact was lost. The cockpit data recorder which was recovered within days of the crash, showed that the jet's airspeed indicator had malfunctioned on its last four flights. If the voice recorder is undamaged, it could provide valuable additional information to investigators. The Lion Air Crash was the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997 when as many as 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. Lion Air which is one of the newest airlines of the country, has expanded rapidly in terms of domestic and international destinations.
