Georgia Meloni Becomes First Woman Prime Minister Of Italy: Report

Following two days of cross-party talks, Meloni, who hails from Rome, has now become the country's first woman prime minister.

New Delhi: Far-right leader Georgia Meloni has been named the Prime Minister of Italy after her party’s historic election win on Friday. Meloni became the first woman to head the Italian government.

Following two days of cross-party talks, Meloni, who hails from Rome, has now become the country's first woman prime minister.

Meloni, who is the head of the nationalist Brothers of Italy, had led an alliance of conservative parties to victory at a September 25 election and will take charge of the country's most right-wing government since World War Two.

"Giorgia Meloni has accepted the mandate and has presented her list of ministers," news agency Reuters quoted the presidential official Ugo Zampetti as saying.

According to the report, the new government will be formally sworn in on Saturday morning and after that it will face confidence votes in both Houses of the parliament next week.

It is to be noted that the new Italian government is set to replace a national unity government led by former European Central Bank head Mario Draghi, who attended a European Union meeting in Brussels on Friday, in one of his last acts as the prime minister.

"We are ready to give Italy a government which will face the emergencies and the challenges of our time with awareness and competence," Meloni tweeted late Thursday.

Earlier, Meloni joined representatives of her coalition to meet President Sergio Mattarella, with the speculation that she could be asked to form a government.  

Although the process of putting together a new Italian administration has been rapid, it has exposed tensions in the coalition, as per reports.
