Drug Overdose Deaths: Record 93,000 People Died In America Last Year

A record 93,000 people died in America last year due to drug overdose. Regarding these deaths, a researcher said that it is a matter of public interest.

New York: In 2020 a record 93,000 people died due to drug overdose in the US in the midst of the corona epidemic. The US government has given this information. At the same time, Brandon Marshall, who closely monitors cases of a drug overdose, and deaths said that this is a big case of casualties. Brandon Marshall is a researcher in public health at Brown University.

If we look at the figures in 2019, more than 72,000 people died due to drug overdose. Brandon Marshall said that the country was already grappling with drug overdose deaths, but corona has worsened the crisis. 

Regarding the increase in deaths due to drug overdose, experts say that people are struggling with addiction and loneliness amidst the pandemic restrictions. Drug addicts are not able to get treatment.

Overdose dangerous

Let us tell you that there was a time when most deaths in America were due to painkillers. After a lot of awareness deaths due to pain killers gradually decreased. But heroin and fentanyl have now replaced them.

"The sudden increase in overdose cases is due to the supply of more toxic drugs," said Shannon Monat, associate professor of sociology at Syracuse University who studied drug overdoses.

Professor Monat said that there is no information about how many American citizens died last year due to drugs. He said that the increase in the death toll is probably due to people already in the grip of drugs.
