Vinai Kumar Saxena Appointed As Lieutenant Governor Of Delhi

Delhi Lieutenant Governor: He is the Chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, an association under the Ministry of MSME.

New Delhi: After former Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal created a stir in political and administrative circles when he abruptly resigned on May 18, Vinai Kumar Saxena has been appointed as the next Lt. Governor of Delhi on Monday, according to a statement by Press Secretary to the President. Saxena is the Chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, an association under the Ministry of MSME answerable for producing employment opportunities in country regions through carrying out khadi and town industry programs.

Baijal, who joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1969, held several eminent positions in an illustrious long career spanning over 37 years.

He served as Union Home  Secretary, Secretary, Urban Development, Government of India, Vice-Chairman of Delhi  Development Authority, Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Joint  Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Chairman and MD of Indian  Airlines, CEO of Prasar Bharati, Development Commissioner of Goa, Commissioner (Sales Tax and Excise) of Delhi, Counsellor In-charge of the Indian Aid Programme in Nepal, Embassy of India, Kathmandu, among other positions.

He was responsible for the introduction of DD Bharti.

Baijal also served as a Member of the Advisory Group for Integrated Development of Power, Coal and Renewable Energy chaired by Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, currently Minister of Railways.

He was the chairman of a high-level committee on the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility in 2016.

In the interim, Baijal, a 1969-batch IAS officer, was delegated as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi in December 2016 after the unexpected resignation of Najeeb Jung.

His over five-year tenure was set apart by successive disagreements with the AAP dispensation over administrative jurisdiction and governance-related issues, remembering one for which Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers arranged a dharna at the LG office in 2018.
