Viral Images | Is There An Underwater Island In Arabian Sea Near Kochi? Officials To Investigate

Kochi: While Google Maps has been a respite for many travellers and new comers in various cities, it has also been quite revealing that Maps had made headlines for displaying some cryptic places on the planet. One such thing was noted by KX Jullapan, a president of an organization of tourism department, and he had posted it on his Facebook, which went viral.

A bean-shaped island like structure was seen in Arabian Sea off the coast on Kerala. The marine experts were left astounding as this was never witnessed earlier. A screenshot from Google Earth has gone viral that shows a bean-shaped 'island'-like structure. According to the reports, it was never physically ventured out but the imagery has kept many scientists baffled. 

While the Google Maps imagery turned many head, it had caught the attention of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies. The officials started an investigation as the officials claim that finding such islands would be practical, which has never been ventured out. 

"Looking at Google Maps, this looks like any other underwater island that we see across the globe. But, we do not know what it is made of whether it is sand or clay and whether it is distributed regularly," K Riji John, the vice-chancellor of the university as quoted by Times Now News.  

He further added that the fishermen have complained about sedimenting by the port in Kochi. 

John added, "Normally, due to underwater current, littoral draft, processes like accretion or erosion of the coast are observed." Accretion means when the sediment comes back to the coast. He added that this is a common phenomenon that occurs in the Southern part of the state.
