New Delhi: The Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on Friday passed three resolutions and four bills in which one bill was on creation of an unarmed police force for the district council areas, reported ANI. Deputy Chief Executive, Animesh Debbarma said, “All the seven bills and resolutions tabled in the council were passed without any opposition with healthy discussion.”
This police bill, of all the bills tabled in the council, held significance as for the first time an autonomous body of North East India under the sixth schedule took a step to form its own police, as stated by ANI.
Reacting on the same, Pradyot Deb Barma, Chairman of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance said, "The police had been placed for discussion and passage to ensure that a certain amount of law order situation comes under the control of the district council administration."
The Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council had raised a bill to constitute an unarmed police force in 1994 which received then governor Siddheshwar Prasad’s assent. The TTAADC was asked by the governor’s office to frame necessary rules. The present TTAADC would carry out the remaining task.
"A bill was passed in 1994 by the TTAADC to raise a separate unarmed police force. It became an act after the then governor Siddheswar Prasad gave his assent to the Bill three years later. The office of the then Governor had asked the TTAADC to frame necessary rules for the purpose. And, the present TTAADC administration will only do the remaining task," quoted ANI.
